The Call

“They passed away last night.”
The first thing I manage to say
And so comes the loud “What?!”
Followed by a tear down my face.

Then comes the silence
And you feel further than ever before
You then say “I’m sorry”
Yet there’s nothing to be done anymore

“Is there anything I can do?”
And that’s when all hell breaks loose
I wish I’d done something ‘one last time’
But they had asked, and I refused

I cry for the next few minutes
Say some stuff that’s on my mind,
You feel powerless yet you comfort me,
I try to process all I need to leave behind

After a while of ‘just being there’
And after I’ve had a good cry,
I know I must let go now,
We end the call with an unspoken goodbye
